Intent

At Worple Primary School, PSHE enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. Our pupils are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. They learn how society is organised and governed and experience the process of democracy in school through the school council. We provide opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a positive member of a diverse society.

Our aims are to enable the children:

  • To recognise their own worth;
  • To work well with others;
  • To develop positive relationships and respect for others;
  • To understand our common humanity, diversity and differences;
  • To know and understand what constitutes a healthy lifestyle;
  • To develop safety awareness;
  • To be positive and active members of a democratic society;
  • To develop self-confidence and self-esteem, and make informed choices regarding personal and social choices;
  • To form good relationships with other members of the school and the wider community.

Implement

At Worple PSHE is a vital part of preparing children for life beyond the classroom. We use the PSHE Association framework to ensure a clear progression of skills and knowledge across the school, alongside the No Outsiders and Rights Respecting Schools resources. These approaches help us promote inclusion, respect and understanding, while supporting children to develop the confidence and skills they need for the future.

PSHE is delivered through engaging, practical learning experiences. Class teachers use a range of approaches including discussions, role play, games, investigations and problem-solving activities. These methods encourage children to think deeply, share ideas and develop the social and emotional skills needed in real-life situations.

We believe that learning should be meaningful and connected to the wider world. Children take part in activities that promote active citizenship, such as charity fundraising, planning school events like assemblies or open days, and supporting others in the community. These experiences help pupils understand responsibility, empathy and the impact they can have on others.

Pupils are supported to develop positive relationships and communication skills. Structured opportunities for discussion allow children to reflect on behaviour, resolve conflicts and learn how to express themselves respectfully. We also welcome visitors from the wider community, including health professionals, emergency services and local faith representatives, who help children understand different roles and how people work together to create a safe and supportive society.

Throughout their time in school, children are encouraged to take on roles of responsibility. These opportunities help build independence, leadership and resilience, ensuring that pupils leave us well prepared for the challenges and opportunities of real life.

Impact

Used as a whole-school, cross-curricular approach, our PSHE curriculum helps prepare our pupils for the responsibilities and opportunities of life and helps enable them to cope with and contribute positively to their futures, becoming successful learners, responsible citizens, and confident individuals
